A Special Delivery: Episode 6 Has Landed
When there’s a problem, or something unexpected happens, how do you react?
Are you quick to anger? Do you let your instincts take over and react to the situation with emotions and hurried actions? Or do you pause, control yourself, and thoughtfully respond?
The difference between a reaction and a response is significant. Reactions often include assumptions based on partial information that lead to negatively judging others and the situation. This hurts relationships in the workplace and in our personal lives.
In contrast, thoughtfully responding to situations is a more productive habit. The process of a healthy response often starts by asking questions to gather additional information, taking time to consider solutions, and moving forward with a positive attitude.
Episode 6: Special Delivery shares the story of Kelly, who gives an important package to her assistant Cedric, with instructions to ship it overnight. The next morning, she finds her package still sitting near Cedric’s desk. What does she do?
Our Inspiration for Episode 6
This episode presents a very common situation. Something negative happens that tempts people to make assumptions and jump to conclusions.
Our primary inspiration for this episode is actually one of our favorite interview questions. The question starts by describing the first part of this episode’s situation, and then asks the candidate, “What would you do?”
The candidate’s answer provides wonderful insights into their habits, priorities, the types of assumptions they make, their relational skills to work through possible conflict, ability to solve problems, and how they respond under pressure.
The world shouts at us to make quick decisions based on partial information, personal bias, our fears, and/or a false sense of urgency or outrage.
This episode provides a glimpse into how we can dismiss outside pressures to attack, and instead develop habits to pause, gather more information that improves our understanding of the situation, and be more intentional as we solve problems.
